Belconnen's Michelle thompson scored the only goal of the game against Canberra FC in the Devil's Womens Fed Cup opener at Deakin yesterday. With the scores level at halftime after a strong performance by FC in the first half, the Belconnen team came out strong in the second period.
A number of moves through the middle of the park and wide led to Belconnen attacks and it could only be a matter of time before the opening goal would be scored. It eventually came from another break, this time from the right, with Thompson being played the ball in behind the FC defenders. Showing plenty of speed Thompson raced to the ball and was composed enough to take the ball closer to goal and with power, lifted it over the oncoming keeper into the top of the net. FC came back at the Devils for short periods after, but the Devils defence showed resolve to make sure they weren't going to score. The win took the Devils to equal top in their group, after Belwest thumped ANU 12-0 in the other group match. The Devils take on ANU next where another win will all but seal their place in the semi finals. The match against ANU is midweek, at Hawker under lights, with kick off at 8pm. |
